First Ward Charlotte |
 |
Perhaps among the most notable elements of First Ward Charlotte real estate is the neighborhood of First Ward Place which is a community of apartments, townhomes and single-family homes and is an easy stroll from the Uptown office towers. What is not evident is that this is truly a mixed-income community, with nearly half its residents receiving housing assistance, living alongside folks who pay market rates for their residences. In 1993, the Charlotte Housing Authority received a federal grant to redevelop Earle Village, a public housing complex. The result was First Ward Place. First Ward Place in turn became the engine that drove the economic miracle that is the First Ward neighborhood today.
Another obvious feature of the neighborhood is the hum of construction activity, as developers vie to fill the remaining vacant property with new projects. This is a living example of the economic phenomenon this has turned into, as the success of First Ward Place has led to other development activity. Indeed, the present and future of Charlotte First Ward real estate is very bright.
The First Ward is the home of important historic and civic institutions. What today is the performance and artistic venue of Spirit Square was born as First Baptist Church. Other neighborhood icons include the Little Rock AME Zion Church, the Afro-American Cultural Center and First Ward Elementary School.
The future of First Ward is certain to have a strong flavor of artistic and cultural venues. The North Tryon area has become a vibrant cultural, arts and entertainment district. A restored Carolina Theater and the new ImaginOn, a children's learning center will only enhance that. And the city's vintage trolley line along with the CATS Lynx light rail service, extends from its South End through the Center City to Eleventh Street, and will encompass several stops in First Ward, which will drive further development. Check out the First Ward Community website.
Charlotte Center City's First Ward is an award-winning mixed income neighborhood. Currently, First Ward is experiencing a wave of major redevelopment bringing new residential complexes and entertainment venues to the district. Anchoring the redevelopment is the new Charlotte Bobcats Arena on East Trade Street. Completed in October 2005, the $265 million venue is home to the Bobcats, Checkers, concerts and family events. The district is also home to the ImaginOn Children's Learning Center and a host of new residential developments.
