Charlotte’s Biggest Rival Health Systems Pour Millions Upon Millions Into Expansions

The Charlotte area’s two biggest health systems seem to be competing for which can be the biggest, strongest health system in the area. Atrium and Novant are dedicating millions towards construction projects. Atrium Heath is based in Charlotte. Novant Health is based in Winston-Salem.

ATRIUM HEALTH

This summer, Atrium revealed its plans to spend more than $1 billion on its facilities in and around Charlotte. It’s currently the largest hospital group in the entire region. This is the largest capital investment in Atrium’s history. It tells the real estate industry onlookers that the area’s strong economy simply isn’t going anywhere. Charlotte has been growing rapidly and will continue to grow.

Atrium plans new technology and state-of-the-art facilities, including a large building in Dilworth that may be a specialty and subspecialty building for trauma, heart and vascular, and neurological services. Atrium also plans to improve access inside older facilities.

Over the next seven years, a majority of the $1B will be spent on Charlotte area projects, including the already begun four-story heart and vascular tower at its NorthEast hospital which will allow for expansion of its cardiac catheterization and interventional radiology services. This tower is expected to be finished next year. Also next year, Atrium will open an expansion at the Levine Cancer Institute by adding 260,000 square feet of space.

NOVANT HEALTH

Novant plans to break ground on two clinics in Charlotte thanks in part to a $7 million donation from Hornets owner Michael Jordan. These primary care and preventative care clinics will provide service for Charlotte residence with little to no healthcare. They are expected to be ready for patients in 2020. Novant sees tehse clinics as able to also provide social work services, behavioral health services, physical therapy, dental services and family planning services.

Separately, Novant also will open a new cancer care center. This one will be right across the street from Novant Health Rowan Medical Center. Novant is also proud of its new hospital in Mint Hill.

The health system’s John M. and Claudia W. Belk Heart and Vascular Medical Plaza and its Edward I. and Agnes B. Weisiger Cancer Institute are expected to be completed by fall of 2020. Its 50,000-square-foot hospital wing isn’t far off and the hospital’s 20,000-square-foot renovation are expected to be completed within the year.
