After Hurricane Florence, followed swiftly by Tropical Storm Michael, blew through North Carolina, downed trees and scattered tree limbs were a major issue for Charlotte neighborhoods. Winds took down several hundred trees in Charlotte.
Charlotte neighborhoods are decorated by very old, very large trees, so this was no small job. Fallen street trees were, of course, the city’s responsibility. Trees further into properties became the responsibility of the property owners.
Unfortunately, the heartbreak of losing an old, majestic tree wasn’t even the practical problem. They also make for slower, more expensive, clean up. For example, a hundred year old oak fell on Queens Road. It was 46 inches in diameter! Plus, in the situation of Michael and Florence, city crews had to wait for power or communications companies to finish their emergency relief work before getting started. In all, last month, more than 360 streets were blocked at some point by fallen Charlotte trees!
