For most first-time homebuyers, there’s a long list of questions that need answers—and one of the most important is “How long does it take to buy a home?”

How Long Does It Take to Buy a Home?

Several factors combine to determine how long it will take you to buy a home. Really motivated buyers can often find the right home within a few weeks—but some are ready to move more quickly than that.

However, there’s more to buying a home than finding the one you want.

If you have your financing in place before you begin your home search, which means you’ve been preapproved (not just prequalified) by a lender and you’ve submitted all your financial paperwork for consideration on a mortgage loan application, your transaction will move more quickly than it would for someone who started the process after finding a home.

You’ll also have a smoother, faster experience if you act quickly to make an offer, respond to counter-offers, and provide documentation to your lender.

On average, most people close on a home within one to two months after beginning a search.

You can see as many homes as you need to see to find the right one. Typically, we advise our clients to bring printouts of each listing and take notes on them; that way, when you leave the homes, you can focus on what you liked (or didn’t like) about each.
