If you receive a Notice of Collection from the NCDOR, don’t ignore it, even if you don’t have the funds to pay the full balance. Notice N0002401 goes out if a taxpayer’s tax debt is final and collections are about to start on the debt. Ignoring the notice until you have the funds just worsens the problem and will add to the debt significantly.
If you get a Notice of Collection from the NCDOR, respond right away. If you can pay the full balance, that’s great! Here’s the online form for that. If you can’t pay the balance though, contact the NCDOR and get an installment payment agreement started. See, if you don’t either pay the full balance or arrange for some kind of payment plan, NCDOR will start forced collections and that will plop an additional 20 percent collection assistance fee on top of the balance.
In order to collect the funds they may deduct 10 percent of your wages paid before deductions, freeze you bank account or even come and seize personal and business assets! It’s way easier and better to just contact them and set up a manageable payment plan. People do it all the time, so even if it’s uncomfortable for you to make that call, it’s normal for them to get that call.
